How patient photos are used
A smile preview starts with a selfie, so here's exactly where that photo goes, in the order it happens. The short version: the full photo never leaves the phone, and the AI only ever sees the mouth.
The photo stays on the phone
When a patient takes a selfie or picks a photo, it's opened in their own browser. Face detection (Google's MediaPipe, which we host ourselves) runs on the device to find the lips and teeth. Nothing is uploaded for this step.
Only the mouth goes to the AI
The browser cuts a square close-up around the mouth, 512 pixels across, about two and a half mouth-widths wide. That close-up, the chosen treatment and a bot-check token are all that's sent. The eyes, most of the face, the background and any other people in the photo never leave the phone.
The AI edits the smile
Cloudflare Workers AI runs an image model (FLUX.2 [klein] from Black Forest Labs) with a fixed instruction for that treatment, written by us and kept on our server. The edited close-up is sent back to the phone, and neither the original nor the edit is stored.
The result is blended back on the phone
The browser matches the edit's color to the skin around the mouth and blends it into the original photo through a soft mask around the lips. Only the teeth and gums can change. Tooth shade adjustments happen on the phone too.
The patient decides what's sent
To see the full result, the patient gives a first name and a phone number or email. A box, checked by default and easy to uncheck, sends two small close-ups of their smile (before and after, 384 pixels) to the practice with their request. Uncheck it and no photo is sent at all.
The practice sees it in its dashboard
Only that practice and Miles Media can open it. Practices see the close-ups so they can understand what the patient is hoping for before they call.
What we never do with photos
- Train AI models on them, ours or anyone else's.
- Use them for facial recognition or to identify anyone.
- Sell them, or share them with advertising or analytics companies.
- Use a patient's preview in Smile Fitter's own marketing.
What practices agree to
Practices using Smile Fitter agree not to use a patient's preview or photos in advertising, on social media or in a gallery without that patient's separate written permission. A preview is there to help a patient decide on treatment. It isn't consent to appear in an ad. This is part of our terms of service.
The sample patients on our site
The people in our examples and on the demo page are not real patients. They're synthetic people generated by AI for this purpose. Their previews were made with the same model, crop and instructions the live tool uses.
How long photos are kept
The close-up sent to the AI isn't kept. Before and after close-ups a patient chooses to send stay with their request in the practice's dashboard while the practice uses Smile Fitter, and are deleted within 30 days after the practice asks or stops. Close-ups sent from a demo page are deleted automatically after 90 days.
Removing your photos
Ask the practice, or email [email protected] with the name and contact detail you used, and we'll delete your request and its photos.
